Ayatul Kursi is the most powerful verse in the Quran. The meaning of Ayatul Kursi is “The Throne” and it is a fitting name since Ayatul kursi reminds us of Allah, the Almighty and most supreme being. It reminds us that no being could take the position of Allah, and that his power sustains us all. By reciting ayatul kursi, we declare the greatness of our God and we seek his protection.
I learned how to recite Ayatul Kursi when I was 8 years old. My mom told me to always recite it whenever I could. It soon became my comfort dua as I began to recite it whenever I found myself alone. I would recite it after every salah, before I went to sleep, entering the car, walking on the streets, and during multitudes of other daily activities.
Later on, my mom gifted me a golden heart locket that had ayatul kursi engraved in it. To this day, this locket is my most prized possession. It has become a tradition for me to wear my locket on important occasions—days on which I need courage,
Reciting Ayatul Kursi keeps my faith strong. In my most helpless moments, it gives me hope to withstand. In September 2021, my basement was flooded during the hurricane. Throughout the night, it looked like the flooding would never stop. All I could do was pray that it would. I recited Ayatul Kursi constantly under my breath while the water continued to flood in. It was the only activity that was keeping me sane. Eventually the flooding stopped, and, Alhamdulillah, everyone was alright. Looking back at this moment along with others in the past, I realize that even when I can’t do anything to mitigate the severity of the situation in front of me, reciting Ayatul Kursi makes me feel as if I am. Turning to Allah is a solution that I come to almost every time when I’m having a hard time, and Ayatul Kursi is one verse that I recite to close the gap between me and Allah.
I hope that I continue to recite Ayatul Kursi during times of conflict, and even times of contentment. I hope to not only recite it just for the sake of reciting it, but to recite it meaningfully. I hope that I continue to seek refuge in Allah(SWT) and that I become closer to him overall.
