Humility In Bronx Science

In Islam, humility plays a magnificent role in the lives of Muslims. In terms of religion, a Muslim may humble themselves to the power of Allah (SWT) in order to follow the commands while avoiding prohibitions Allah forbade one to do. As humans, we need to abandon all pride in order to stand deferential and submissive to Allah. There are myriad hadiths and ayats mentioned in the Quran that illustrate how important the act of humility is in Islam. “The servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth in humility…” (25:63) truly conveys the idea that humbleness must be integrated in a Muslim’s imaan (faith).
However, this core concept must also be displayed in our daily lives. Everyday at Bronx Science students come in and exhibit acts of humbleness and humility. Fatima Islam (age 16) says that whenever she sees someone struggling for help, even if it’s just for a simple math problem, she always tries her best to try and help them. There are numerous cases where the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) would prioritize those who are “less fortunate and of lesser status” over himself. One such hadith is “O Messenger of Allah, I want something from you. He said: ‘see on which side of the road you would like (to stand and talk) so that I may help you.’ He then stood aside with her on the roadside until she got what she needed” (Muslim, 2326). In this example alone, the Prophet (PBUH) did not think of himself so important as to block the road even while doing a good deed. Additionally, he treats her with kindness and doesn’t shame her for asking for help. Even he understands that no one is more important than another.
In contrast, other students even stated that they display acts of humbleness through asking for help . In a school with classes that contain different grade levels, older students can get discouraged for asking others questions when needed. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has been described as “the most perfect man on Earth” but in times of need he would request others for support. It was reported that even he would never refrain from going with his companions to accomplish their tasks. If someone like Mohammal (PBUH) is able to freely seek assistance when needed, we should be able to let go of our arrogance and become humble as well.
Humility is an attitude that we all must use in our daily life, whether if its related to religion or if its at school. As a school with such a high name and status or even the fact that we are bombarded with school assignments, tests, homework, and even projects, many students often neglect how important it is for us to stay humble and to swallow our pride once in a while in order for us to commemorate the one who is actually above us all; the Most-Merciful, the Most-Beneficial.
