Plaintiff Finds Mercy in the Courts

In most court cases, angry plaintiffs make their cases, the defendant rebuttals, judges make their verdicts, hands are shook between attorney’s, and the court is adjourned. While this scenario exemplifies the classic regime of most trials, a 2015 criminal case involving a Muslim man, Sombat Jitmoud, and his murdered son, showcases an emotional and a rather refreshingly raw perspective in which the victim’s father humanizes his son’s attacker, Trey Relfrod. Not only was Mr. Jitmoud’s ability to move a jury into tears admirable, but his heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, religiously and morally poignant speech, where he exudes a tranquil, almost spiritual aura, captured his inner strength and discussed where he found the ability to show mercy to the person who murdered his pizza delivery son in Lexington, Kentucky.

During the sentencing, Mr. Jitmoud embraced Relford, who cried on his shoulders. Subsequently, this moment of vulnerability was exacerbated as Relford’s parents joined and apologized on their son’s behalf.

Where did Mr. Jitmoud find his strength? In the spirit of Islam. "I'm angry at the devil, who's misguiding you and misleading you to do such a horrible crime," Jitmoud told Relford in court. Finding solace in the verses of the Quran, Mr. Jitmoud said that the verse he connected with the most asserted: “Say, 'Never will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector.' And upon Allah [God] let the believers rely."

When the court adjourned, he whispered into Relford’s ear to, essentially, make amends from the point, to see his wrongdoing as a sign, a second chance to make something better for his life, and to do “good deeds,” and to, most importantly, “ have confidence that Allah is the most forgiving.”
