Culture v. Religion

What is bid’ah? Bid’ah is any innovation that has been made up by people that has not been written in the Qur’an nor has it been acted upon by the Prophet saw.

  • The Prophet (PBUH) and was narrated by Ibn Mas'ud that one day the Prophet (PBUH) drew a straight line on the ground and He said, "This is the path of Allah." Then he drew some lines to the left and right to it and said, "These are the erred paths and on each of these paths, there is Shaytaan calling to it."

  • Prophet (PBUH) said in an hadith, "Kullodalalatin fin naar (every dalalah is in hellfire)." AND THEN HE SAID... “Kullo bidatin dalalah (every bida is dalalah)” ----> this shows how bid’ah isn’t just ANY sin...it is the WORST OF THE WORST.

  • Possible Questions:

  • What are some cultural taboos that you’ve encountered?

  • How can we explain to our parents/elders that the cultural taboo that they’ve been following since childhood isn’t part of the religion?

  • Should we still follow cultural taboos if they aren’t part of the religion if our parents do? (for like minor things)
