About Brigade

MISSION STATEMENT

Bronx Science's Muslim Students Association (MSA) first began as a small club consisting of only a handful of members. However, as the years progressed and by the will of Allah swt this MSA has grown to become one of the largest student organizations within the school.  What started from a mere 10 to 15 member club has blossomed over the years to become a solid 70 member club. The Bronx Science MSA community consists of people from all different kinds of backgrounds, whether it be faith, race, or social status. We aim to educate the youth about Islam as a means of combating stereotypes and improving one another in terms of faith and good character through MSA meetings, prayer congregations, and chill days. We are nothing short of a family.

HISTORY

Founded in 1998, the Bronx Science MSA has grown immensely since its start. Its first ten years consisted of low attendance at meetings and a lack of strong leadership. Reestablished in 2008, the MSA was rejuvenated under the leadership of former Bronx Science MSA President, Saba Memon. After the institution of a prayer room and increased recognition amongst Bronx Science students, the Bronx Science MSA has flourished and has become increasingly well-known on even a national scale.

MEET THE BOARD

President- Albina Islam

Albina Islam is currently a high school senior who lives in Jamaica, New York. She is currently the president of the Bronx Science MSA. She enjoys baking, sleeping, and organizing. Albina has participated in many organizations such as New Horizons and Turning Point. As the organizer for the New Horizons bake sale, Albina managed to combine her favorite pastime with organization and leadership skills. After her responsibilities as the secretary of MSA, she also finds time to tutor children and volunteer in a nursing home. Albina is known as a tough and strict perfectionist. This behavior can be explained from her being the oldest sibling which has resulted in her always making the decisions. Those who are closest to her know her as easy going, funny, and dependable. When she wants something done, she gets it done. She aspires to be a doctor and hopes that one day her hard work will pay off (inshallah).

Vice President- Shahara Ahmed

Shahara Ahmed is a high school senior who lives in Queens, New York. She enjoys reading, writing, and biking. Shahara also enjoys studying and working with children. She is involved in several faith-based programs and is a strong advocate for youth empowerment. One of six sisters, Shahara also loves to spend time with family. As a part-time tutor, student, actress, and community leader, Shahara loves to keep busy but balances it all out by staying rooted to her faith. Unknowing of where the future will take her, she aspires to work with children and families in the future with a part-time career in acting. She hopes to be more generous by bringing opportunities and happiness to children and families who are in need, the same way Bronx Science MSA provided her with opportunities and happiness.

Secretary- Nishat Hoque

Nishat Hoque is a 16 year old girl, who currently lives in Queens, NY. She joined MSA in her sophomore year and has been greatly affected by the experience. Through MSA she increased her knowledge on Islam and strengthened the bond between her and her peers. Her favorite things to do on the weekends is to read, draw and play sports. Her favorite sports are volleyball, basketball and badminton. She is fascinated by Japanese culture and hopes to go to Japan in the future (inshallah). She is very shy and is not a very good public speaker but she is good with group work. She has three sisters and is the oldest out of all of them. In the future she aspires to be a doctor and to establish a clinic in Bangladesh named after her father (inshallah).

Treasurer- Arman Islam

Arman Islam is a rising junior at Bronx Science. He he has lived in Jamaica his whole life, and loves the community centered around JMC. An interest of his is sports. He follows many sports and really enjoys watching basketball, baseball, and football. His favorite teams are the mets, knicks, and the saints. He also plays baseball, basketball, and football. He played JV baseball for Bronx science and is currently playing on a travel team. He strongly believes people like him arent just restricted to cricket. At first, people tend to think of him as quiet and shy but usually think differently after they get to know him. He originally did not like public speaking, but becoming the treasurer of MSA made him realize that it can be a fun thing to do. He feels that MSA has helped him become a better Muslim and stay on track with his deen. It also helped him lose some of his shyness and speak his mind more. MSA is where he made real, and good friends. He hopes that MSA can serve others the way it has served him.

Events Coordinator- Humail Patel

Humail Patel is currently a junior attending The Bronx High School of Science. He grew up in Bellerose, New York, in a fairly religious household where Islam came first and everything else came later. He pursued his academic and religious studies in Hamza School, which integrated both a full time Quran memorization program as well as academic studies. This friendly environment provided him not only with a stable foundation of Islam, but also motivated him to do well in his academics. Alhamdulillah, he was able to complete the memorization of the Quran at a young age while maintaining his academic studies. However, the transition of a small private school in Long Island to the bustling Bronx Science in the city was extremely difficult. As a confused and terrified freshman, he was late to nearly every class and began to feel a sense of hopelessness that he didn’t belong in such an environment. He then decided to join the Muslim Students Association after much persuasion from his cousin, hoping that it would facilitate the transition and assuage this stress. He was not disappointed as the MSA not only provided him with a sound environment full of good friends, but also provided him with something much better: a second family. He has cherished these strong bonds since then and has become a dedicated member mainly because he wants to give back to the MSA what it gave to him. Humail has served as the Events Coordinator of the MSA for the 2013-2014 school year and will, by the will of Allah, serve as the President of the MSA for the 2014-2015 school year. Humail believes that the MSA should epitomize generosity not necessarily through charitable means, but by providing the best possible environment a high school student should ask for. He hopes that along with the MSA, he can provide that which he was provided as a freshman; a sense of closeness and acceptance to those who feel hopeless or left out
